W alter Kelly, Theater’s Virginia Judge Dies

Philadelphia, Jan 6, --[AP]—Walter Kelly, know to theatergoers as, “The Virginia Judge,” died today of injuries received when he was struck by an automobile at Hollywood. He was 65.

At the bedside when death came to the character actor was his brother, John B. Kelly, Democratic city Chairman of Philadelphia.

The “Judge” was injured three weeks ago and had brought her by his brother.

In 1904, his vaudeville Partner, the Late Marie Dressler, became Ill before a performance.  Kelly met the dilemma by borrowing a Prince Albert coat and a gavel.  Thus, was born “The Virginia Judge.”

His theatrical fame was shared by a brother, George Kelly, who penned “Craig’s Wife” to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Except for infrequent appearances Kelly left Vaudeville in 1928 to enter the legitimate theater and the films.  In 1933 he portrayed the rascally Congressman Anderson’s hit, Both Your Houses.”
