Note: Martha  Walker Darling Milhous was born March 2, 1910.  She appears in the 1910 Federal Census  April 18, 1910.  She was not born in 1911 or 1912.  However, in the 1910 Census it list her age as 5 and born in 1905.  However, the two travel documents list her correct birthday as March 2, 1910.  The Social Security Death index list her birth year as 1899.  However, she doesn't appear in the 1900 Federal Census

Wedding Bells to Ring In Governor’s Mansion
COLUMBIA [UPI]-For the first time in nearly 15 years the strains of the wedding March be heard be heard and rice will be thrown in the Governor’s Mansion here Thursday in the Capital City Governor Fritz Hollings is married is married at high noon.

Martha [Bonnie] Browne of Savanah, Georgia.  Will be married to Peter Crist of Chicago in the first ceremony held at the historic home of South Caroline since 1947 when the GOV. J. Strom Thurmond married Jean Crouch.

Two members of the state’s first family will be active participants in the wedding as Gov. Hollings will give away the bride and his oldest daughter, Helen Hayne, will as junior bridesmaid.

The groom is the grandson of short story writer Sherwood Anderson and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sherwood Anderson.  Mr. Anderson is the former owner and editor of the Washington County News in Abington VA.

Miss Barbara Walker Browne and Mrs. Chiswell Dabney Langhorne of Bedford, VA., were married May 25  in St. Andrews Parish Church.  The REV Howard Cutler Officiated.

 The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Frank Averill Browne of 7 Trapman St. and the late Mr. Brown. The bridegroom is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chiswell Dabney Langhorne, and nephew of the late Lady Astor. 

The Bridge was given in Marriage by her uncle, Sen. Ernes Frederick Hollings.  Mrs. Peter Crist Anderson of Wilmington, DEL., was her sister’s matron of honor.  Miss Helen Hayne Hollings was maid of Honor for her cousin.


Mr. W. Langhorne Bond of Warrenton, Va. Was best man for his nephew.  Senior groomsmen were MR. Otis R. Conklin and Mr. Joseph Elliott Spann.  Groomsmen were Mr. W. Langhorne Bond Jr. of Alexandria Va.  Cousin of the Bridegroom:  Mr. Peter Crist.  Mr. Neill Stull of Alexandria and Mr. Wythe Holt Tuscaloosa, Ala.


After the reception in the home of Sen and Mrs. Hollings, the Couple left for Europe and South Africa.  They will live in Washington D.C.


The Bride attended Converse College and the University of South Carolina.

 Mr. Langhorne, a graduate of the University and the law University law School, is employed by the First National Bank of Washington.

Mrs. Martha Milhous Browne died Sunday. Born in Denmark, she was the daughter of the late John Darling and Martha Kittrell Milhous.  She was a graduate of the University of South Caroline and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Cathedral Church of of St. Luke and St. Paul.


Surviving are daughters of, Mrs. C.D.[Barbara] Langhorne of Washington and Mrs. Martha Hayne Anderson of Wilmington, Del:  a sister, Mrs. V.M. Salley of Charleston; and grandchildren.


Services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Denmark cemetery.

Memorial may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, Charleston.
