WILLIAM McFarland  DEAD
MASONIC FUNERAL TO TAKE PLACE TOMORROWN AFTERNOON.

William McFarland died at his home, 1102 South Market Street, at 4:45 O’ Clock yesterday afternoon, after a long illness.  He had been a resident of Wichita for about eight years.

He was born in Coventry. Vt., June 20, 1829.  Leaves surviving him his wife, two daughters and one son, William McFarland, day operator for the Associated Press in this city.

The deceased was a member of the Mascon order.  At the time of his death he was a member of Sunflower Lodge No. 85, A.F. & A.M.  which organization will have charge of the Funeral services.

The Funeral will be held from the late residence Friday afternoon. Interment in the Highland Cemetery.  There will be services at the residence and Masonic services at the grave.

COL M’FARLAND DIES AT CAMP

FORMER HUTCHINSON MAN WAS STRICKEN SOON AFTER ARRIVAL AT FT. RILEY

Lieut. Col. William McFarland 55. Executive Officer of the 130th field artillery, Kansas National Guard and special assistant adjutant General of Kansas died last night army Hospital at Ft. Riley.  He was stricken Monday night and Tuesday his condition became so serious that Captain Don Shaffer at Camp Whitside at the annual camp with Col. McFarland, telephoned to McFarland’s sister, Mrs. J. L Bascom [Joseph Loomis Bascom Sr.]to Come without delay.  The Funeral services will be held at Wichita and burial will be in the cemetery there beside his father.

Col. McFarland was born Malin Ill., and came when a young man to Ellis County, Where the family WAS ONE OF THE Well know pioneers in that section of the state.  He became interest in telegraphy and later was an Operator, for the Associated Press for Many years.  When the World War declared he join the 110th field signal battalion of the 35th division and served throughout all the engagements of the division.

After the war, he came to Hutchinson to be with his mother, Mrs. Mary McFarland and his sister.  Mrs. J.L. Bascom and for a short time was with several of the grain offices here.  Later he went up to Hastings, Nebraska., but returned to Kansas to enter the office of the adjutant general four years ago.  Since living in Topeka, he has had his mother with him.

He is survived by his mother and two sisters, Mrs. Bascom of this city and Mrs. Lou Van Tassel of Sparks, Nevada.  Mrs. Van Tassel’s husband died less than three weeks ago.

Col McFarland was never married.  He was very devoted to his mother, his sisters, and nephews. And had many friends, made wherever, he lived.

This afternoon the boys of 60th field artillery brigade held a service at Camp Whitside in Memory of their officer who had been so loyal and friendly to the all through the year of their association together.

Mrs. J.L. Bascom, Ellis, formerly of Hutchinson, died at a hospital here Friday following a short illness. The 74-year-old woman, whose late husband was once employed by the Arnold Auto Company at Hutchinson, is survived by two sons, Joe Jr. and Mack, both of Ellis.
