W. Althause Passes Away
Herman W. Althaus, an aged and well known resident
of this city passed at his home at 318 South Pine Street, late yesterday after
several years, his condition being critical for the past few weeks.
The deceased was born June 26, 1849 at Smithton,
St. Clair County, Illinois and was 70 years of age at the time of his
death. He has resided here with his
family since 1907.
He is survived by his widow Mrs. Eva Althaus. Mrs. F. T. Fowler of Portland, Mrs. F. L.
Mattice of San Francisco, Herman, Theo W., Bertha and Louis all of
Roseburg. Private funeral services will
be held, the exact time of which has not been arranged, but is being held until
the arrival of Mrs. Mattice and Mrs. Fowler

country from Illinois to settle in Roseburg, Oregon in about 1909. Herman had a
plumbing shop.

Mrs. Anna Eva Althaus, for 15 years a resident of this city,
passed away at her home on West Douglas Street last night after a long
sickness.
Mrs. Althaus has been falling in health for several months and for
the past three months has been unable to be out of her home.
Mrs. Althaus was 63 years of age having been born October 7th,
1858 at Twelve Mile Prairie St. Claire County, Illinois. She was married December 4th 1879 at
Freesburg Illinois. Eight children were
born, seven of which survive, one son having died at the age of six months. In
many 1907, she with her husband and family came to this city where she has ever
since remained and has made many dear and loving friends, who deeply mourn her
death.
Seven children survive. Mr. Althaus having passed away several
years ago. The children are Henry C. of Portland, Herman G. of Roseburg, Theo
W. of Roseburg, Louis L., of Roseburg. Mrs. F.L. Mattice of San Francisco, Mrs.
F.T. Fowler of Portland and Mrs. H.D. Cox of Portland besides a large circle of
Friends.
Private services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 O’clock
at the Undertaking Parlors. Rev Hilton,
pastor of the Local Christian Church will officiate. The Body will be taken to Portland where
burial services take placed in a vault next to Mr. Althaus.

Theodore William, [Ted] Althaus, 70, well known Roseburg Plumber,
died Suddenly Monday morning from a heart attack.
He was born at the Smithton, Illinois. , April 28, 1883, and came
to this community about 1907. He was married
in Vancouver, Washington, on January 23, 1939, to Wanda Armour. He was a member
of Aerie 1492, Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Obituary—Bertha Cox
A Memorial service will be
held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of All Saints Episcopal Church for
Bertha Althaus Cox, who died Wednesday at a Portland nursing home.
Mrs. Cox, 85, who lived in Northwest Portland for many years, was
born in rural Illinois and had lived in Portland since the early 1930s.
During
the late 1920s, and early 1930s, Mrs. Cox raced thoroughbred horses in the
United States, Canada, Mexico and Cuba.
She was employed at the now-defunct Actors Club during World War II, and
also worked as a hostess and receptionist for Portland Elks Club. She retired from the Elks Club in 1958.
Survivors
include two nephews, Floyd Althaus of Roseburg, and Louis Althaus of
Portland; three nieces, Alberta Sensi of
Daly City, Calif., V. Louise Gale of Albany and Margaret Strombaugh of
Portland.
Private
interment was held at Portland Memorial Funeral Homes.

Death Takes Mrs. Fowler
Funeral Planned For Wednesday
Mrs. Louise Fowler, wife of
Fred T. Fowler, Portland traffic engineer, died Monday at St. Vincent Hospital
after a short illness. Funeral Will be
private Wednesday at Mikeworth’s Peninsula Funeral Home. Concluding services
will be at Portland Memorial.
Mrs. Fowler was born March 17,
1888 at Smithton, Ill. The family moved
to Oregon in 1907 and settled at Roseburg.
After her marriage in 1909 she moved to Portland, and lived here since
that time.
Survivors are the widower; two
daughters, Louise Gale of Roseburg and Margaret Strombaush of San Jose, Cal;
three brothers, Herman G. and Ted Althaus of Roseburg and Lewis Althaus of
Portland; two sisters, Bertha Cox of Portland and Lillian Mattice of San
Francisco.
