George Tyler Hanscom—A distinguished feature of
the career of George Tyler Hanscom has been his services in connection with the
educational advancement of California with which he has been identified for
more than forty-three years. Born in a rural district fourteen miles southeast
of Stockton on the French Camp Road, November 17, 1954 the son of Josiah W.,
and Amanda M. [Tyler] Hanscom, the father a native of East Machias, Me.; the
mother also a native of Maine, her native town being Alexander, a daughter of
George Tyler, a farmer and lumberman. Josiah W. Hanscom was a farmer, and
during the school season taught the country school. During the year of 1850 he came around the
Horn in an old packet, landing in San Francisco early in 1851. He purchased land on the French Camp Road,
owning 640 acres at one time; here he taught school and engaged in farming. In
1875 he sold his property and located at Ceres, and there farming occupied his
time until he retired from active business cares. He spent his last days with his daughter who
resided in San Pablo, and where he passed away in 1898. Mrs. Hanscom arrived in California with her
brothers, Robert and Daniel Tyler, in 1853, and was immediately married to Mrs.
Hanscom at the home of Andrew Wolf in Stockton.
She passed away at the family home in Ceres in 1893. Her brothers were engaged in mining in
different parts of California, Oregon and Nevada. Robert Tyler passed away in Sacramento and

years he has been principal at various points.

opened up a branch commission house of Lemos and Hanscom in Modesto, and has
been their efficient manager for a number of years, making a specialty of
buying poultry and hares, which he ships to their San Francisco Headquarters.
The marriage on February 17, 1880, united him with
Miss Lilla J. Logan a native daughter, born near Eugene, Stanislaus County,
