Alfred Spear of 97 Meadow Street, North Amherst, died tonight at his home. He was born at North Amherst, September 26,
1867, and was the son of George Porter Spear and Camelia Ann [Mayo] Spear. He was married June 19, 1895, to Miss Edith
M. Brown of North Amherst by the late Rev William Gaylord, Mr. Spear was a
member of the North Congregation Church and was a retired electrician, retiring
in 1920. He leaves besides his widow one
son Russell Mayo Spear of Madison. N.C.; three grandchildren, one sister, Mrs.
B.F. Dustin of North Amherst, and three nieces.
The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Albert H.
Douglas Funeral home. REV Theodore T.
Dixon, pastor of the North Congregational church, and Rev B. F. Dustin will
officiate. Burial Will be in the North Amherst

SPEAR, 93, OF 81 Meadow St., the Oldest member of the North Amherst
Congregational Church, died Monday in her home.
She lived here more than 75 years. She leaves a son,
Russell M., of Madison N.C. and sister, Miss Mildred [Shepherd] Brown, with
whom she made her home. Douglas Funeral home is in charge. Burial will be in
the North Amherst Cemetery.

Tuesday in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. He was 79.
Spear was editor of the weekly
paper for more than 30 years, from 1934 to 1967.
He had been in declining
health for several months.

Editor Russell M. Spear Dies - Here 50 Years The Messenger
Madison, NC - Russell Mayo Spear, 79, editor of The Messenger for
almost 50 years, died Tuesday morning in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in
Greensboro. He had been declining in health for several months.
Spear was a native of Amherst, Mass. He was a graduate of Amherst
College and held a master's degree in English from the University of
Massachusetts. Before becoming editor of The Messenger, he taught in a private
school, New Hampshire Academy, and was an advertising salesman in Chicago.
Spear and his wife, Marion "Mimi" Spear, moved to
Madison in 1934 when they purchased The Messenger during the Great Depression
days.
He was past president of the Madison Rotary Club, past president
of the Madison Merchants Association, past president of the Rockingham County
Fine Arts Association. He was an early president of the Madison Boosters Club,
which inaugurated the Madison Fair as a community enterprise in the 1930s. He
served on the Madison Zoning Board, which made possible the development of
Dalton Homes, a housing project that eliminated a black ghetto.
He was the son of the late Henry and Edith Spear, both natives of
Amherst, Mass. He is survived by Mrs. Spear, a daughter, Karlyn S. Shankland of
Jamestown; sons, Michael M. of Richmond, Va., and David M. of Madison, 8
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services
are planned Thursday at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery outside Madison. The
family will receive friends at Ray Funeral Home in Madison from 7 to 9 p.m.

MADISON—Russell Mayo Spear, 79, of 108 S. Wilson
St., Former editor and publisher of The Messenger Weekly newspaper in Madison,
died Tuesday at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at
Woodland Cemetery.
Spear was the editor of The Messenger from 1934
from 1967, when he became publisher.
A native of Amherst, Mass., Spear attended Amherst
College and earned a master’s in English from the University of
Massachusetts. Before moving to Madison
in 1934. Spear worked as a teacher at
the New Hampshire Academy of private school and as an advertising salesman in
Chicago.
Surviving are wife, Mrs. Marion Mimi Anderson
Spear; Daughter Mrs. Karlyn Shankland of Jamestown: sons, Michael of Richmond, VA., David Spear
of Madison’ eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
The family will be at Ray Funeral Home 7-9 p.m.
today.

the Novelist, Sherwood Anderson, and of Mrs. Cornelia Anderson of Michigan
City, the novelist’s first wife, became the bride of Russell Mayo Spear in
North Amherst, Mass., yesterday. Mr. Spear
is the son of Henry A. Spear of North Amherst.
The ceremony was read by the
REV Byron [Spear][ Gustin], an Uncle of the Bride Groom. Mrs. Anderson and Henry Spear were the only
attendants.
The bride formerly attended
the University of Chicago. Mr. Spear is
a graduate of Amherst College.
