SCHERER, SIMEON - Pastor 1854-1858 and 1874-1876
Simeon Scherer was born October 29, 1819 in Guilford County. His parents were the Rev. Jacob Scherer and Elizabeth Scherer. An older brother was the Rev. Gideon Scherer. He was married three times. First, to Mary Ann Davis, July 24, 1851. They had one daughter, Sarah. The second marriage was to Sarah Ann Roseman, February 6, 1855. They had four sons. The third marriage was to Mrs. Harriet Isabel James, April 3, 1861. They had two sons, the older had died before July, 1874; the other was the Rev. James A. B. Scherer. Churches served: in Virginia and Rowan County: Union; St. John, Salisbury; Bethel; Salem; St. Peter, and Organ churches. Organized Christiana, 1871; and Christ, East Spencer from 1848-1853 and Friedens, Cobles, Lows-Guilford County, St. Paul-Alamance County 1855-58. After serving Troutman, Beth Eden, Newton and St. Paul again, he died July 11, 1876. He is buried here in Friedens Cemetery.

LIII. Sarah A. J: Roseman:--Married: February 6, 1855 Catawba County North Carolina the REV: Simeon Scherer a Clergyman of the Lutheran Church.  He was born October 29, 1819 in Guilford County North Carolina.  He was educated at Roanoke College, Virginia and the Theological Seminary at Gettysburg PA.  He served various parishes in Virginia and North Carolina and for twenty-four years was prominent in the ministry of North Carolina Synod.  His wife preceded him to the eternal world eleven years dying February 15, 1865.  She is the interred in the graveyard of Union Lutheran Church in Rowan County North Carolina.  He subsequently married and had a son REV. James A.B. who is a missionary of the Lutheran Church in Japan.  He married Bessie Beaver, a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in Japan.  Rev S. and Sarah Scherer had issues as Follows:

Scherer, S. Rev. held a meeting at St. Paul’s Church in Alamance Co. October 24-27. Ten were received by baptism and confirmation. On Nov. 14 he held a meeting at Frieden’s Church and ten were received into the Church. Thirty two gave evidence and applied for membership. Christmas dinner was enjoyed with the congregation at the Parsonage. Lutheran Visitor 1/15/1875, page 2; he subscribed to the Lutheran Visitor. Lutheran Visitor 2/11/1876, page 3; he has recovered enough from sickness to be able to ride horseback. Lutheran Visitor 6/9/1876 page 2; he gave notice he can no longer serve his congregation because of poor health. Lutheran Visitor7/14/1876 page 2; He died 7/11/1876. Burial was from Frienden Church. Lutheran Visitor 7/21/1876 page 2; resolutions on his death; each minister belonging to the Synod of NC was requested to preach on the death of the departed pastor. Lutheran Visitor 8/4/1876 page 2; Rev. Simeon Scherer 56 years, eight months and 12 days old died July 11, 1876.  He was a member of the NC Synod. For several years he was subject to great body infirmity.  He was survived by a wife, six children and many friends. Lutheran Visitor 8/4/1876 page 3; Rev. S. Scherer of NC Synod recently died. LIII. Sarah A. J. Roseman4 [Annie [Hoke] Roseman3 Frederick Hoke2,Sabina [Swope] Hoke, John Swope, Yost Swope] was born July 11, 1834, in Catawba County North Carolina.  She married February 6, 1835, the REV SIMEON SCHERER, a clergyman of the Lutheran Church.  He was born, Oct 29, 1819, in Guilford County North Carolina.  He was educated at Roanoke College, Virginia, and the Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, PA.  He served in various Parishes in Virginia and North Carolina and for twenty years was a prominent in the ministry of the North Carolina Synod.  His wife preceded him to the eternal world eleven years, dying February 15, 1865 She is the interred in the graveyard of Union Lutheran Church in Rowan County North Carolina.  He subsequently married and had a son REV. James A.B. who is a missionary of the Lutheran Church in Japan.  He married Bessie Beaver, a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in Japan.  Rev S. and Sarah Scherer had issues as Follows:

Scherer, January 13, 1856.  He prepared himself for the ministry of the Lutheran Church at Pennsylvania College and the Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa.  He was ordained and entered the active work of the ministry in 1885.  He served the parish of Harper’s Ferry Va., for several years, and then entered Kee-Max College, Hagerstown, Md., as teacher, where he remained a year.  He is now pastor of the church at Radford, Va.

Sergeant Hugh Paxton Bigham: Lincoln’s Guard at Gettysburg

The H. Paxton Bighams had seven children, three sons (James, William, and Hugh Paxton, Jr.) and four daughters (Agnes McGaughey, Margaret Eliza, Mary Arnold, and Jennie Belle). Four of them all three sons and their daughter Agnes died within 1 to 13 months after they were born. Of the three daughters, only Mary Arnold, wed to the Rev. W.J.D. Scherer, had children: Margaret Roseman, Mary Elizabeth, and Jennie Belle Scherer. Only one of these three daughters, Jennie Belle Scherer Detrich, had children. Part II contains the family lineage and descendants.

LXXXIV REV. Wilberforce J D Scherer [Sarah, [Roseman] Scherer, Annie Hoke [Roseman], Frederick Hoke, Sabina [Swope] Hoke, John Swope, Yost Swope] was born March 6, 1861.  He graduated with first honor from Roanoke College VA., in 1881, having the previous year taken the Greek Medal. He pursued his theological course at the Seminary of the General Synod, South, at Salem, Va., and was ordained to the ministry was spent in Church 1883.  The first Year of his ministry was spent in missionary work in the South after which he entered upon regular parish work and is now pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, of Concord, N.C. He is a member of the Board of Directors of North Carolina College and a member of the Board of Directors of the Theological Seminary of the United Synod, at Newberry, South Carolina.  In 1895 he was elected secretary of the United Synod of the South.  He married, October 20, 1886, Alice M.C. Ehrman They had issues;

Scherer, M. G. G. Rev. will take a 4-month vacation in FL. The Lutheran Visitor 1/4/1883, page 4; on his vacation – wrote of the beautiful landscapes of Florida; he described the areas he toured. The Lutheran Visitor, 3/29/1883, page 3; he gave a summary of the past year at Bethel Pastorate, Mount Jackson VA. Lutheran Visitor 5/17/1883, page 5; he gave a report on the Communion meetings at Mount Jackson VA on June 3 and June 10.  The weather was not good and the meetings were not fully attended.  There was an addition of one person to the Church.  As the weather cleared up the attendance increased and there were 19 new members at the second meeting.  He gave a report on the activities of the congregation and ministerial duties. Lutheran Visitor 6/28/1883, page 4 & 5; Rev. Scherer held full communion at Bethel and Crossroads Church; both meetings were largely attended. Infants were baptized and the debt to Richman Mission was reduced. Lutheran Visitor 9/20/1883, page 4; Rev. M. G. G. Scherer of Mount Clifton VA accepted the position of missionary of the GA Synod and will go into his field in North GA starting January 1. Lutheran Visitor 12/13/1883, page 5; Rev. M. G. G. Scherer was the new missionary of the GA Synod.  He can be located at Jonesboro, Clayton Co. GA. Lutheran Visitor 1/10/1884, page 5; he wrote an article about his mission work. The bad weather and the fact that the Churches are incomplete and without heat made his work considerably hindered.  He visited all the Churches along his mission and took a survey of the work before himself.  He had one or two places where the prospect is gloomy but others are very promising. Lutheran Visitor 2/14/1884, page 5; he baptized eight children at a communion service. There was arranged a reception at the home of Dr. W. G. Houseal where he will be entertained until his own residence can be placed in order. Lutheran Visitor 8/3/1899, page 8; he entered upon his duties. A large number of gifts were sent to the Parsonage and on Sunday morning he held services to a full house. Lutheran Visitor 8/10/1899, page 8; his sermon on ‘The Reformation’, Lutheran Visitor 11/9/1899, page 2, 3, 4; he was offered the position of professorship at Roanoke College. He has the call under consideration, Lutheran Visitor 9/5/1901, page 8; he accepted the position at the Theological Seminary. He tendered his resignation at the Church of Redeemer in Newberry SC. He was born 3/16/1901 in Catawba County NC, son of Rev. Simeon Scherer of the NC Synod and grandson of Rev. Jacob Scherer. In the last 80 years he family supplied a dozen ministers to the Lutheran Church. He also has 3 brothers in the Lutheran ministry. He was ordained 1883 and in 1886 was conferred the degree of AB. The Observer –- Death of Mrs. Harriet I. Scherer cause by a fall

Laurinburg North Carolina June 24, Mrs. Harriet I. Scherer died yesterday at the home of her son A.L. James [Alexander Long James] On Church Street and was buried today at the town cemetery.

Mrs. Scherer who was quite old and feeble received a serious fall on Monday night which was the immediate cause of death:

Her Son REV James A.B. Scherer Pastor of the Lutheran Church in Charleston arrived time for the funeral.  [Note: Living in Japan]

Scherer, James A. B. Dr. Rev. suffered the loss of his mother Mrs. Harriet I. Scherer on 6/16/1903 at Laurinburg NC where she lived with another son. She died as the result of the accident when she fell from the window of her room in a second-story sustaining fatal injuries. She was thought to have walked in her sleep.
