John Jacob
Scherer was born Feb 7, 1785. He married first Elizabaeth Moser (b= Dec 5,
1787) on May 15, 1810 and they had 8 children. Michael Moser Scherer, Rev.
Gideon Scherer born circa 1811 in Guilford Co, NC, Rev. Simeon Scherer born Oct
29, 1819 in Guilford Co., NC., Lee Scherer born ca 1813, Rachael born May 14,
1814 (m=David cormany Mar 16, 1833 and died Nov 12, 1863 in Columbus Texas).
Elizabeth (Moser) Scherer died July 10, 1826 in Guilford Co, NC and then John Jacob Scherer married wife #2 a widow name Elizabeth Spoon (maiden name was Grieson) on Jan 8, 1827 in Orange Co. NC. Elizabeth Spoon had 2 girls from her union with Mr. Spoon. They are Eliza B. born May 14, 1823 and Sarah Eve born in 1817. Sarah Eve Spoon later marries her stepbrother, the Rev. Gideon Percy Scherer. John Jacob and wife #2 have 2 children together and one of then is Luther who is listed as the youngest son. I don't know which of the rest of the children go with wife #1 and which go with wife #2. The rest of the children's names are:John Jacob , Catherine, Mary Ann, Hannah, Leah, and Daniel. There is an interesting story about the marriage to wife #2. Rev John Jacob Scherer confirmed Elizabeth Grieson in the church, performed her wedding to Mr. Spoon, conducted the funeral for Mr. Spoon, and then he married her.
If you go to a website about the Handbook of Texas Online there are several articles about the Scherer's and also Colorado College which they founded. Another website is
NC-FRIEDENSCHURCH-L@rootsweb.com which has alot of history on the Scherers. If you want more information, e-mail me at crossroadsc@aol. I have a copy of a diary of John Jacob Scherer Junior the brother of Gideon Scherer, too.

SCHERER, GIDEON (1811–1861). Gideon
Scherer, Lutheran minister and founder of Colorado College, was born near Rural
Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Spoon)
Scherer, on December 2, 1811. He studied in a country school and probably
received further formal training, for he was a practicing minister when, about
1852, he and his wife decided to come to Texas to minister to German Lutheran
immigrants. The Scherers made their way by the Kanawha, Ohio, and Mississippi
rivers to New Orleans, then to Galveston, and finally to Columbus, where
Scherer organized a church. He served as trustee for the congregation in the
acquisition of a town lot and the construction of a church building, which was
completed by 1854. In 1857 he and his brother, John Jacob Scherer, founded
Colorado College in Columbus. Jacob Scherer, their father, who was also a
minister and had come to Columbus in 1854 at the age of sixty-nine, taught in
the college until his death. Gideon had three sons and two daughters. His wife
died before 1860. In 1858 ill health compelled him to resign his ministry; he
died in Columbus on June 2, 1861.

COLORADO COLLEGE. Colorado College, in
Columbus, was said to be the first Lutheran College in Texas. It was founded in
1857 by John Jacob and Gideon Schererqqv and their father, Jacob. J. J. Scherer
was professor of ancient languages and president of the school. The board of
trustees consisted of nine members, the majority of whom had to be members of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Enrollment reached as high as 300. There were
negotiations in 1868 to sell the three-story building to the First Evangelical
Lutheran Synod of Texas. The IOOF Lodge purchased the school in 1871. The
College was last reported functioning in 1886.

Obituary: Snavely, Leah (Scherer)
We regret to record
the death of Mrs. Leah Snavely, which occured[sic] on the 9th instant, in
Columbus, aged about 56 years. She was an estimable lady, long a resident of
this city, and loved and respected by a large circle of friends. Her wants were
kindly ministered to in her last hours by sympathizing friends, to whom her
relatives are under obligations. She was originally from North Carolina, but
has been a resident of Columbus for over twenty years. [Place of intermentunknown]
