DEATH OF ASA A. Spear

Native of Amherst and Well-known New York Lawyer Dies at His home in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Asa A. Spear, 74, a well-known lawyer and a native of Amherst, died Thursday morning at his residence 269 New York Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., of heart trouble.  Mr. Spear was one of the best-known citizens of Brooklyn, having lived there since 1870.  He was for 44 years a member of the Puritan Congregational Church, at Mercy and Lafayette Avenues, and was president of the board of trustees for most of that time.  When the Puritan church merged with the Tompkins avenue Church, Mr. Spear went to Central Church, where he lie was received into membership a week ago Sunday, Mr. Spear had been in the practice of the law in New York City for more than 40 years.

Mr. Spear was bornin Amherst, Mass., in 1841, and had just passed his 74th birthday. He was married in Massachusetts and went at once to Brooklyn.  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Caroline Spear; one son Clarence A. Spear, and one grandchild.  The funeral arrangements have not been completed.  Mr. Spear took a deep interest in the Congregational home for the aged in Brooklyn and was instrumental in the purchase of the plot of ground 225 by 257, on Linden avenue, Flat-Bush upon which the new building is to be erected.  He formulated the plan for the raising of the fund with which to erect the building and was the treasurer of the home since inception.  He was active in all denominational affairs, always attended the meetings of the organizations connect with the welfare of the denomination, and his counsel and advice were eagerly sought. He was interested in the work of church extension and missionary caterprises.

As a sophomore at the Amherst college he laid down his books took up the sword and commanded after mortal wound of its captain, his company of Western Massachusetts comrades in the Withering unit successful siege of Port Hudson which Grant’s a littler earlier capture of Vicksburg, opened the Mississippi and divided the Confederacy.  The profession of law in which, after Amherst and Columbia degrees, he passed his entire life was congenial to and his practices he added a sense of equity, Charity and helpfulness, so that to the Client he was as much friend as counselor.
