MOUNT PLEASANT—Von Etta Milhouse Salley, 92, of 921 Bowman Road, died Jan 2. 1989.

She was a graduate of Columbia College, and  also earned a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina and Columbia University in New York City.  She was a retired professor of library science and a retired librarian at Columbia College and USC.

She was a member of the American, Southeastern and South Carolina Library associations.  She was a member of the South Carolinian Society, the South Carolina Historical Society and the South Carolina Education Association.

She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia.

Surviving is her daughter Patricia Salley Hollings of Charleston.

Graveside services: 10:30 a.m. Friday in Denmark Cemetery.  Denmark. J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, Charleston

CHARLESTON - Services for Patricia Salley "Pat" Hollings, 78, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 18, 2001 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of service. James A. McAlister, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.



Mrs. Hollings, former First Lady of the State of South Carolina from 1958 to 1962 died Friday, February 16, 2001 in Charleston. Mrs. Hollings was born May 15, 1922 in Columbia, the daughter of John Haskell and Vo nEtta Milhous Salley. She graduated from Columbia High School, attended Converse College and the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. As First Lady, she was instrumental in attracting new business to the state. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and La Sertoma where she became active in the Easter Seals Campaign and the Charles Webb Children's Center. Mrs. Hollings was recently awarded the Order of the Palmetto for service to the state as First Lady.

Surviving are her sons, Ernest Frederick Hollings, III of Kissimmee, Fla., Michael M. Hollings of Columbia; daughters, Salley Hollings of Charleston, Helen R. Reardon of Glennwood Springs, Conn.; grandchildren, Salley Hollings Seabrook, Patricia Salley Schwerdt, Steffani Conner Schwerdt, John Elliott Reardon, II, Dain Frederick Reardon, Patricia Hayne Reardon, Christopher Charles Milhous Hollings.

Miss Salley, Mr. Hollings To Wed in March


Announcement has been received here of the engagement of Miss Patricia Salley, daughter of Mrs. VonEtta Milhous Salley, of Columbia; to Mr. Ernest Frederick [Fritz] Hollings, of Charleston and the University of South Carolina.  The wedding will take place in March.

Miss Salley attended Converse college for two years and later attended the University of South Carolina, where she majored in fine arts.  At the university she was pledged to Kappa Delta women’s fraternity and was a member of Junior Damas.  She has been residing in Columbia since her graduation from the John Robert Powers school in New York, last year.  And is a member of the Spinsters’ club of Columbia.

Mr. Hollings son of Mrs. Adolph G. Hollings of 338 President Street, and the late Mr. Hollings, was graduated in 1942 from the Citadel where he was captain of his company and a member of the Round Table.  He served for three years in the European theater in anti-air-craft and held the rank of first lieutenant.  He has been attending the University of South Carolina since his discharge from the service.  His mother is the For Miss Wilhelmina Meyer, of this city.
