OBITUARY

JOHN J. COSTELLO

Was All-Round Athlete and Father of Olympic Champion Oarsman
John J. Costello, father of Paul V. Costello, the Olympic Champion oarsman, died early yesterday morning at his home, 4141 Ridge avenue, Falls of Schuylkill, after an illness of six weeks.  Death was due to anemia.  He was 56 years old.

Mr. Costello was himself an all-around athlete.  He assisted in the organization of the Philadelphia Swimming Club, of which he was a charter member, and was at one time boxing instructor of the “Schuylkill Navy.” Mr. Costello at one time conducted a gymnasium at Fifteenth and Arch Streets, where he taught the boxing game to several men now prominent in pugilistic circles.  He was said to have been possessed of one of the best physiques in Philadelphia at one time, and frequently posed in statuary tableaux in amateur theatricals.

For three weeks Mr. Costello had been a patient at Misericordia Hospital, but was taken to his home prior to his death.


He was a member of Santa Maria Council of Knights of Columbus: Holy Name Society of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.  The Young Men’s Literary Institute of the same church and was for the last twenty-three years a clothing salesman.

Mr. Costello is survived by his widow, Hanna R.; a daughter May V. Costello and two Sons. Paul V. and John L. , all of who were at his bedside when he died.

P AUL COSTELLO, 92 WON THE GOLD AT 3 OLUMPICS

Paul V. Costello, 92, the first competitor to “take the gold” at three consecutive Olympic Games, died yesterday at the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital.  He lived in the East Falls section, where he had been born.

An oarsman, Mr. Costello won gold medals in doubles rowing at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp Belgium, and the 1924 Olympics in Paris During both, he was paired with another great oarsman his cousin John B. Kelly Sr. [Father of HRH Princess Grace Patricia Grace Kelly].

In the 1928 games he paired in doubles competitions with another cousin Charles H. McIL vaine.  McILvaine and Costleo won the event at Sloten Holland, a town outside Amsterdam.

The victory Made Mr. Costello the first man to win gold medals at three Olympic Games in a row.

He held other titles as well. He won the single sculling championship in 1924.

Competing on behalf of the Penn Athletic Club, he repeatedly scored victories on the Schuylkill until he retired in 1932 at the age of 38 From the point he rowed for personal pleasure.

Mr. Costello, who maintain a summer residence at Ocean City, N.J. believed in keeping in fit . Until he was in his late 80’s, he swam three or four times daily in the surf.

Nothing beats swimming for staying in shape, “he told an interviewer.

His physical fitness paid off.  When Resorts International honored the more than 100 American gold medal
w inners in 1989, Frank Sinatra had special honors for Mr. Costello at 84, he was the oldest champion at the Casino in Atlantic City.

He explained that in addition to swimming for exercise, he had taken up bicycle riding.

Through the years, he held a number of jobs that gave him freedom to pursue his interest in rowing and other sports.  For a time he was in the Automobile business.  The he took a post with the state Department of Internal Affairs and a few months later switched to a post as deputy coroner.

Finally with the endorsement of John B. Kelly, city of Democratic Chairman/ he was appoint to a job as a tipstaff in Municipal Court.

He worked in the courts until he reached retirement age.

Active in sports organizations he served a vice president of the US Olympians and was a member of the US Rowing Associations. The Vesper Boat Club, the Men of Malvern and the East Falls Senior Citizens.


He was inducted into the Helms Hall of Fame in 1956 and elected to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Elfreda “Freddie” Glaser Costello.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the McILvain Funeral Home 3711 Midvale Ave. A mass of Christian Burial Will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bridget’s Church, 3673 Midvale Ave.  Burial will be Westminster Cemetery Bala Cynwyd.

OARSMAN TO WED

Wedding Bells will ring Tuesday for Paul V. Costello, three times Olympic Champion, and Miss Elfrada M. Glaser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Glaser, of 4812 N. 12th St.

 John B. [Jack] Kelly, City Independent Democratic leader, who was Costello’s partner when they won the Olympic doubles in 1920, and was bow man for the win in 1924, is to be best man at the ceremony.  REV Charles J. McGinely rector of the Holy Child Catholic Church, Broad and Duncannon Sts. Will conduct the marriage service in that church 4 P.M.


Costello won the doubles crown in 1928, at Sloten, Holland, with Charley McILvaine, of Penn Athletic Club.  Costello is 38, and retired from rowing competitions in 1932.  He is associated with a West Philadelphia Automobile sales Agency

Costello now lives at 6917 Limekiln Pike. After their Honeymoon the Couple will live on Penn St., Falls of Schuylkill

PAUL COSTELLO, 92 WON THE GOLD AT 3 OLUMPICS
