The Dreaded Gift Return

The Dreaded Gift Return
Not So Easy
A Report by Consumerreports.org
Don't feel guilty about returning that singing mounted fish your cousin bought you. He might be returning your gift, too. About 40 percent of Americans take back at least one gift after the holidays, says the National Retail Federation.If you find yourself in line to return a gift this season, you're apt to discover that store policies have become stricter. Restocking fees for opened boxes or missing packaging are increasingly common, and not just for electronics. For example, Sears now imposes a 15 percent restocking fee for some appliances, tools, and lawn and garden products.
===================================================================
Stores have also become more persnickety about receipts. Last summer, Target changed its policy to allow for two receiptless returns a year of items less than $20. Before that the threshold was $100.Kmart, Lowe's, and Wal-Mart are among the retailers that now use computer systems to monitor how often customers return items without sales slips. If you bring back too many within a given period, the store might stop accepting them. Some retailers say they're trying to prevent returns of stolen goods.
===================================================================
HAPPY RETURNS If returning a singing fish is essential to your sanity, follow our tips and the process should go swimmingly.
===================================================================
Check the policy. It's probably on the store's Web site. If not, call the customer-service line or the store. Note that some stores have more generous return policies for goods purchased at holiday time.
====================================================================
Handle with care. Lost tags, missing packaging, or damaged boxes make it less likely you'll get your due. Amazon.com says it won't accept returns of products missing the serial number or UPC square on the box. Best Buy and Circuit City charge a 15 percent restocking fee on some electronic items whether or not you've opened the box. But you should not have to pay a restocking fee if the item was defective when you unwrapped it.
==================================================================
Bring the receipt. Being able to present one makes it more likely that you'll get back the item's full value. Without a receipt, a retailer might credit you with the lowest recent price or simply deny your return altogether. Gift givers should try to include one whenever possible.
==================================================================
Go to the right place. If the item was purchased by mail order or on the Internet, make sure you send it to the address the retailer specifies. The retailer might also have a location near you that takes mail-order returns. Sears, for instance, accepts Lands' End returns at its stores. But Macy's and Kohl's, which sell online and in stores, don't accept returns by mail if the merchandise was purchased in a store.
===================================================================
Clear your good name. If your return is denied and you don't know why, you may have been incorrectly flagged by a store's computer for committing "return fraud." You might be able to correct the matter by e-mailing the Return Exchange, a company that monitors returns for retailers, at returnactivityreport@thereturnexchange.com.

Bad Choice Ordering On Line Walmart.COM

Bad Choice Ordering On Line
Never Shop Walmart.COM. On December 4, 2007 I purchased on line the X BOX Elite System Bundle Package. The Total cost was $763.02. The price includes taxes and shipping and handling.
All the Items for the X BOX was coming. I received, Wireless Controller; two games and the Web Camera. All but the X BOX Console Elites. I was suppose to receive it On December 10, 2007. The Game system had not arrived.
So on December 17, 2007 I called the 800 966 6546 I spoke to a Supervisor by the name of Wendy. I explained to her about the order and that I had not received the X BOX Elite Console and I had asked where it was. I was suppose to receive it.
Wendy Said I must have been lost in transition and that she would send me another and I would receive in by December 24, 2007. I told her I am going to be in Pittsburg PA. I also said that is not what I was promised and that is not what I paid for. She said I was right. So she said that it would be sent by UPS overnight shipping at no charge to me.
On December 18, 2007 I checked my E-mail Wendy the supervisor instead of being honest with me she failed to tell they were out of stock on the X BOX Elite 360 system. To Cover Walmart.COM tracks they sent The Arcade X BOX system figuring I am not going to notice the difference. I noticed the difference.
The Arcade Mode would not have support the extra merchandise that came with the Elite System which is 120 GB. and there is a price difference. The Arcade Mode X BOX 360 runs $279.99 and the Elite X BOX 360 is priced at $449.92.
I confronted Walmart and that became hell; On December 18, 2007 I called the 800 number again provided by Walmart and I spoke to another Supervisor Elizabeth I said why did Walmart try to defraud me. She made excuses for Wendy.
I told her this wrong. I went to the Store in OAK GROVE KENTUCKY. The Store tried to correct what Walmart.com They had done with the X BOX Elite system in the store. However; Walmart.COM to the Store they could not do that and I was not entitled to a refund at that point because of the Arcade Mode had not been returned. I had not received the ARCADE MODE and my credit card still would have been defrauded $207.22. With Tax and Shipping the Console cost $486.22. Minus the difference $279.00
Right now my credit card is still defrauded by Walmart $486.22. I returned the systems components. The Store could not credit my credit card at that point.
The Arcade Mode of the X BOX arrives at my home December 18, 2007 at 2 PM Centeral time. So I refused the shipping on the grounds of Fraud. I had the UPS sign the receipt that the item was refused. 1 800 742 5877 the number to the United Parcel Service to track shipping.
I had asked Walmart why could they have been honest and I would have told them to refund the money. Also I had asked walmart for something that is expensive; when they shipped the item; I had asked this to Wendy; how come the company just ships expensives Items and not ask for a signature. I told her I had purchase from Dell Computer and Verizon and I had to sign for the items I had order for security reasons and to make sure I had received the items.
I was going to buy the system at first through AMAZON.COM I never had a problem with Amazon.com.
Now I will have to fight with my credit card company and declare fraud with Walmart. I have already submitted the paper work.
When I went to the store only one the Managers said Walmart did not committ Fraud I said and showed him the paper work and I said to him explain the matter to me.
Walmart.COM has not gone out of its way to correct the problem they made the problem only worse.
Bottomline Walmart.Com doesn't require a signature on expensive items they just take your money and when it comes to shipping the carry just drops the item off and leaves it without the patron signing for the items. I blame the Walmart.COM.
I figured if I buy it from Walmart I was going to have no problems and if I had a problem with the system I could take to the nearest store. My husband is currently serving in IRAQ and I am Disable American Veteran. My husband wanted to do something for his children.
This is terrible what Walmart has done.

Cause and time of death
During vehicle breakup, the robustly-constructed crew cabin detached in one piece and slowly tumbled. NASA estimated separation forces at about 12 to 20 times the force of gravity g very briefly; however, within two seconds, the forces on the cabin had already dropped to below 4 g, and within ten seconds the cabin was undergoing free fall. These forces were likely insufficient to cause major injury. At least some of the astronauts were likely alive and briefly conscious after the breakup, because three of the four Personal Egress Air Packs (PEAPs) on the flight deck were found to have been activated. Investigators found their remaining unused air supply roughly consistent with the expected consumption during the 2 minute 45 second post-breakup trajectory. Whether the astronauts remained conscious long after the breakup is unknown, and largely depends on whether the detached crew cabin maintained pressure integrity. If it did not, time of useful consciousness at that altitude is just a few seconds; the PEAPs supplied only unpressurized air, and hence would not have helped the crew to retain consciousness. The crew cabin impacted the ocean surface at roughly 334 km/h (207 mph), causing an instantaneous deceleration of over 200 g, far beyond the structural limits of the crew compartment or crew survivability levels.[9]

Space Shuttle Challenger

The Challenger launch, originally scheduled for January 22, 1986, came on January 28 at 11:38 am under a brilliant blue sky and near-freezing temperatures. All appeared normal in the first moments after liftoff, the 25th since the shuttle program began in April 1981. But after 73 seconds, at an altitude of 14,000 meters (46,200 feet), Challenger exploded in an enormous fireball of hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Its two booster rockets took off in different directions leaving a trail of flame and smoke, forming an immense "V" in the sky. In addition to McAuliffe, 37, and Scobee, 46, the Challenger disaster killed co-pilot Michael Smith, 40; physicist Ronald McNair, 38, only the second black astronaut; Gregory Jarvis, 42, a mission specialist; Ellison Onizuka, 40, a Haitian-born astronaut of Japanese descent; and mission specialist Judith Resnik, 37. Twenty years later, the US space shuttle program has Still not overcome doubts about its safety and value. A presidential commission concluded the accident was caused by a defective seal on a solid rocket booster. NASA carried out an elaborate review of its rocket design and spent more than two billion dollars on modifications.

But the credibility of the US space agency was again called into question after the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry into the atmosphere in February 2003, due to a loose piece of insulating foam that punctured its wing on take off.

Francis Richard "Dick" Scobee (May 19, 1939 - January 28, 1986) was an American astronaut who died commanding the Space Shuttle Challenger, which suffered catastrophic booster failure during launch of the STS-51-L mission.
Born in Cle Elum, Washington, Scobee enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957, where he served as a reciprocating engine mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas. While off duty, he attended college, and eventually received a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona in 1965; the same year, he was awarded an officer's commission. Afterward, he attended flight school and earned his wings in 1966, serving as a combat aviator in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and other decorations.
After his tour of duty, Scobee attended the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, just outside Los Angeles, California. Upon graduation in 1972, he became an Air Force test pilot, logging thousands of hours of flight time in dozens of aircraft, including the Boeing 747, the experimental X-24B lifting body, the F-111 Aardvark, and the gigantic C-5 Galaxy. Scobee died a Lieutenant colonel. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Selected for NASA's astronaut program in January 1978, Scobee completed his training in August 1979. While awaiting his first orbital spaceflight mission, he served as an instructor pilot for the shuttle's 747 carrier aircraft. In April 1984, Scobee piloted Challenger mission STS-41-C, which successfully deployed one satellite and repaired another.
Scobee was elevated to the role of spacecraft commander for the ill-fated STS-51-L mission. The mission, designed to deploy a satellite to study the approaching Halley's Comet and to inaugurate the Teacher in Space Project, was delayed numerous times due to bad weather and technical glitches. When the mission finally did lift off the pad, an O-ring seal failure destroyed the shuttle 73 seconds into the flight, killing Scobee and the other six members of the crew; the tragedy, viewed live on national television, prompted several days of national mourning, as well as a major shakeup at NASA.
Laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, Scobee was survived by his wife June (nee Kent) and two children, Kathie and Richard. In his spare time, he loved all forms of outdoor activity, as well as flying, oil painting, woodwork, riding motorcycles, playing racquetball, and running. In 2004, Scobee was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
He attended Auburn Senior High School, Cascade Middle School, and North Auburn Elementary School in Auburn, Washington. He graduated in 1957. After the Challenger explosion, North Auburn Elementary School was re-named Dick Scobee Elementary School in his honor. Auburn Municipal Airport was also renamed Dick Scobee Field.[1]
Dick Scobee Road in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was also named in his honor.[2] Also located nearby in Myrtle Beach are Ronald McNair Boulevard and Christa McAuliffe Street.

Scobee was portrayed by Barry Bostwick in the 1990 TV movie Challenger.
