Chapter Two: William 1 Barnhill, Sr.

The William 1 Barnhill, Sr. of Guilford County, North Carolina first settled on Quaker Creek in Orange County North Carolina, probably sometime between; 1745-55. He is reported to have been born in County Antrim Northern Ireland in about 1720, and came to North Carolina with Orangemen from Ulster. He and Robert 1 Barnhill , Sr., probably a brother, are found on adjacent lands in 1780 on Quaker Creek a branch of the Haw River about twelve to fifteen miles north of the present day city of Burlington, now Alamance County. He married Sarah__________, more than likely in Northern Ireland.

During the 1780’s: William 1 Barnhill, Sr., along with his son William, Jr., his son-in-law William Jenkins, left the Quaker Creek settlement and acquired 212 acres in Guilford County, North Caroline on Buffalo Creek, a few miles southeast of Greensboro. 1 Their lands were near those of David Barnhill, who was probably another brother of William 1 Barnhill, Sr. and Robert 1 Barnhill Sr. It was on this land in Guilford County that William, Sr., spent the remaining years of his life, and where he died as “an old man” in the fall of 1791.

ab1. William 1 Barnhill, Sr. and his wife Sarah [_______] Barnhill are known to have at least four children:

By Frank Clinton Barnhill Marshall County Missouri For Mrs. Emma Dunn MAstin, Owensboro, KY

ROBERT BARNHILL [WIFE RACHEL] of Orange County, North Carolina, acquired lain Rutherford N.C. by grant dated Jan 20, 1796. He probably never lived on the land, because the land was sold by deed dated Aug 12. 1797, executed by “Robert Barnhill of Shelby County, Kentucky” to Samuel Carter for 70 pounds.

This proves that our Robert Barnhill and wife Rachel, with their family of five boys and one girl, had removed to Shelby County, Ky. Prior to August 12, 1797.
