Miss Mary G. Thayer, for 30 years a teacher in the public schools of this city, passed away this morning at her home 49 Tremont St, after a week’s illness of laryngitis.  The greater part of her service was at the Greenwood School, where she taught the second grade.  Miss Thayer was born in Saugus and was the daughter of George A. and Rachel E. Thayer. She was educated in her home town and graduated from the Salem Normal School 1882, coming immediately to Malden.  She taught for a time in the Old Linden School.  Miss Thayer was a member of the Malden Teachers’ assn. and is survived by a sister, Miss Ella Cheever Thayer of Boston.  Miss Thayer was last at her desk a week ago yesterday and her death was a great shock to her friends.  She had resided about five years.

Funeral of Miss Thayer

Miss Mary G. Thayer, for nearly a generation, a much beloved teacher at the Greenwood School was laid to rest Monday afternoon at Saugus.   The funeral services were conducted at her late home 49 Tremont St. at two O’clock by REV H.H. French D.D., Pastor of the First Congregational Church and the house was filled with relatives and friends.  At the close of the Eulogy REV Dr. French Read Tennyson’s “Crossing the Bar.”

Out of Respect for the deceased the flags on all the public buildings were half-mast and the Greenwood School was closed during the afternoon.

There was a large number of beautiful floral tributes.  Including a spread of Carnations from the children of the second and third grades of the Greenwood School which she taught.
