George Tyler Hanscom—A distinguished feature of the career of George Tyler Hanscom has been his services in connection with the educational advancement of California with which he has been identified for more than forty-three years. Born in a rural district fourteen miles southeast of Stockton on the French Camp Road, November 17, 1954 the son of Josiah W., and Amanda M. [Tyler] Hanscom, the father a native of East Machias, Me.; the mother also a native of Maine, her native town being Alexander, a daughter of George Tyler, a farmer and lumberman. Josiah W. History of Stanislaus County
Nathaniel C. Hanson Page 872

Nathaniel C. Hanscom-A well posted, interesting old-timer in San Joaquin Valley who has seen a deal of what has happened in California for many years, and has also helped to make the history of which as an engaging and instructive conversationalist, he is able to talk for hours, is N.C. [Nathaniel] Hanscom, who was born, a native son, near Stockton on March 1, 1856. His father was J.W. Hanscom [Josiah Weston] was a native of Maine and left the East in 1849 to come to California around Cape Horn; and having arrived in San Francisco early in 1850, he pushed inland to Mariposa and mind.

In 1852 Mr. Hanscom’s betrothed came out by way of Panama; she was Miss Amanda M. Tyler, was also a native of Maine, and were married in Stockton, after which they located on some land and engaged in stock raising and general farming. In time, Mr. Hanscom owned a farm at Atlanta; but he sold it in 1873 and removed to Ceres; and there both of these worthy pioneers died. They had seven children, of whom are still living:

1.             George Tyler Hanscom: is in the commission business in Modesto;
2.             N.C. is the subject of our Story;
3.             B.B.  is in Vallejo and works at the Navy Yard
4.             S.L. is in San Francisco
5.             Elma was Mrs. Kirkwood and died in Oakland
6.             N.B. died at the age of twenty-one;
7.             R.H.is also at the Navy Yard at Vallejo

The Second oldest, N.C. Hanscom was brought up on a farm, while he attended school, and at eighteen he entered the San Jose State Normal School, from which he was graduated in 1875.  Then he engaged in Teaching and was Principal of successive schools in Calaveras County, at San Andreas, in Stanislaus County, and also at Seattle, Washington.  From 1880 to 1884 he put in four years in News Paper work on the Post Intelligencer and Daily Herald, in Seattle, and then he worked in various news-papers offices in California, including Stockton.

In 1913, Mr. Hanscom started business in Turlock, opening a general commission house for Shipments to San Francisco Market; and he became interest in ranching in Stanislaus County, owning, with his brother, S.L. Hanscom, an excellent farm.  S.L. Hanscom also, while served for some years as editor of the Modesto Herald.  George T., S.L. and N.C. Hanscom are all interested in Stanislaus ranch properties, and they all have an interest in the commission business with Lemos & Hanscom in the San Francisco enterprise, their energetic cooperation spelling success where others fail.

By his marriage to Martha Coulter, Mr. Hanscom has had one son, Waldo Hanscom, who now fills with signal ability the very responsible position of Chief engineer of the City of Astoria, Oregon.
