Elizabeth
“Beth” Mitchell Walker Mickens Randolph of Richmond was the last surviving
grandchild of legendary banker Maggie Lena Walker, the first black woman in
America to found and charter a bank.
Walker served
as president of the St. Luke’s Penny Savings Bank, which later became
Consolidated Bank & Trust Co.
Born in
Richmond on Sept. 25, 1924, Ms. Randolph was the daughter of Walker’s younger
son, Melvin De Witt Walker, and his wife, Ethel Robinson Walker.
Ms. Randolph,
who died of cancer at 90 on Feb. 16 in a Richmond rehabilitation center, grew
up in her Grandma Walker’s home at 110½ E. Leigh St. She later moved two blocks
down Leigh Street to the home of her Robinson grandparents, where she spent the
rest of her life.
She fondly
recalled Sunday afternoons and holidays where family gathered around the grand
piano at the Walker home.
“Everyone put
on a show,” recalled her son, Johnny Mickens III of Richmond. “Her grandfather
Armstead Walker played the violin, my mother probably sang and other people
played instruments.”
Ms. Randolph
met many illustrious people at the Walker home. She especially remembered boxer
Joe Louis, probably because she loved sports. She had played basketball at
Armstrong High School before her graduation in 1941 and in the community
afterward. She also had been a lifeguard at the Brook Field pool in North Side,
her son said.
“She was a
die-hard fan of the Washington Redskins and the LA Lakers,” he said. “I mean
die-hard.”
Ms. Randolph
loved going with the other Walker grandchildren in Walker’s limousine - a
Pierce Arrow - to picnic in Evergreen Cemetery after church on Sundays, as was
the custom of the day.
Walker would
sit in her wheelchair in the middle of the back of the limousine, with a
grandchild sitting on either side. “My mother loved sitting next to her
grandma,” Mickens said.
Walker
enrolled Ms. Randolph and the rest of her grandchildren in the NAACP, Mickens
said.
His mother
also was active in the juvenile division of the Independent Order of St. Luke -
“that was a requirement. It taught fiscal responsibility,” Mickens said of the
fraternal group that supported social and financial advancement of the black
community. “It had the same curriculum as Junior Achievement, only 25 to 30
years earlier.”
Mentored
spiritually by Walker, Ms. Randolph became a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal
Church at an early age.
She met her
first husband, Johnny Mickens Jr., while she was a physical education major at
Virginia State College. They were married three years and then divorced. A
second marriage, to Carl Randolph, also ended in divorce during the 1960s.
During the
early 1950s, Ms. Randolph ran playgrounds for the Richmond Department of
Recreation and Parks at Seventh and Duval streets and at 17th Street and
Greenwood Avenue.
After a
company officer invited her to apply, she joined Home Beneficial Life Insurance
Co., becoming the first black woman to work in the accounting department.
“The only
blacks in the company at that time worked in custodial duties,” Mickens said.
She retired there in 1980.
Ms. Randolph
“would speak out about anything she wanted, to anybody, at any time and
anywhere,” Mickens said.
“She didn’t
care who liked it or didn’t.”
She
unsuccessfully campaigned, through distributing petitions at black churches,
for the post office to create a stamp to honor Maggie Walker.
She was active
in the Maggie Walker Historical Foundation.
Ms. Randolph
still attended St. Philip’s Episcopal Church at 2900 Hanes Ave., where a
memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m.
“She read her
daily Word. When I was a child, she went every Sunday to watch me serve on the
altar - some things were not negotiable,” Mickens recalled.
