HENRY L. STAPLES DIES AT 49; WELL-KNOW ADVERTISING MAN

Henry L. Staples, president of Staples & Staples, advertising counselors of this city, and widely known in business and civic circles here died at a local hospital yesterday afternoon after a brief illness. He was 49 years old.

A son of the late Henry Lee Staples, Richmond real estate man, and Mrs. Sarah Norwood Dudley Staples. Mr. Staples lived all of his life in this city. He was trained in the Richmond public schools and as a young man began his career in adverting business organizing the firm of Staples and Lemon. Subsequently the firm became Staples and Staples and as such has been well known for years.

Funeral Services Friday
Mr. Staples, whose home was on Duntreath Road, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Funeral Services will be held Friday afternoon at 3:30 O’clock. With burial in Riverview Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be W.P. Waters. Paul Booth. Dewitt Hankins. H.B. Derieux, Clarence Boykin’s. Edwin Cox. A Holmes Allen and William W. Rixey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bobbie Vincent. Dr. John Hughes, Jenifer Sutton., Gus Wilcox, Dr. Pierce Rucker. Dr. Thomas Murrell. Evan R. Chesterman Jr. and Dr. Warren Vaughn.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Barnhill Staples: one daughter, Miss Mary Boone Staples: one son. Henry L. Staples 3rd: One sister Mrs. J. Harry Whitmore of Wilmington N.C.: one brother D.D. Staples of Richmond and his mother, Mrs. Sarah Dudley of Richmond

Ancestry.comI can help in your request. I have slightly different dates and spelling of names for some data, though.Thomas Staples (died 1805) married Eleanor Thompkins, also daughter of Giles Thompkins and Valentine Childs, making her Martha Thomkins's sister.

According to my information, John Staples was born December 20, 1773 (not 1775). I believe he was a magistrate of Albemarle County From 1802 to 1806.

I have some gaps in my data, but Thomas Staples (1747 -1805) had a younger brother named William. He had a sister named Prudence who was born in 1760, so it is possible that your William Staples is Thomas Staples's brother, but I do not have birth and death dates for William.

Thomas Staples was my direct ancestor, begetting John (1773), who begot John Tyler Staples(1811 - 1893), who begot Henry Lee Staples I (1841 - 1847), father of Henry Lee Staples II (1889 - 1938), father of Henry Lee Staples III (1920 - 1990). I was born in 1956.

The Thompkins families and Staples families are closely intertwined from the mid 1700's through the mid 1800's. There were many marriages between the clans.
