SPRINGFIELD MASS JANUARY 2, 1959 Miss Mabel R. Welch, a painter of miniatures, died last night at her home in Wibraham after a long illness. She was 87 years old.
Miss. Welch, who studied at the Art Students League and in Paris, won the Silver Medal of the Pan-Pacific Exposition in 1915. The Pennsylvania society of miniatures Painters presented to her it’s Medal of Honor in 1920, and she received a similar award in 1933 from the Brooklyn Society of miniature painters.
In 1937 Miss Welch received two awards. The National Society of women Painters and Sculptors gave her the Lindsey Morris Sterling Prize for Miniatures and the California Society of Miniature painters awarded to her a medal for portraiture.
The Medal for Merit from Asbury Park Society for fine Arts was presented to Miss Welch in 1940. That year also, she won the Levantis White Bordman memorial prize. In 1955, she received the medal for Miniatures from the National Association of Woman Artists.
Her work is represented in permanent collections at the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington and the Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts. She exhibited her work also in Los Angeles Chicago, the 1939 New York World’s Fair and the Paris Salon.
