MRS. Brown had Premonition Several Days Before Last Sickness Began.

MOSCOW, IDAHO, AUG 5—The Funeral of Mrs. Henrietta Brown, wife of E.N. Brown, Occurred yesterday from the Presbyterian church, of which she was member.  It was one of the largest funerals ever witnessed in Moscow.  The body was viewed at the family residence by friends and relatives from1 till 2:30 O’clock, during which time hundreds paid their respects.

The large church was crowded beyond its capacity.  The members of the Elks lodge attended as individuals in large numbers on account of Mr. Brown being an active member and Mrs. Brown having on numerous occasions entertained them.  Several Elks from Pullman also attended.

A peculiar fact of her death is that on the 11th of last July, 10 days before Mrs. Brown was taken sick and while yet about town as usual, she wrote a letter to her mother and friends, in which gave directions of for the disposition of her estate and particulars  of her funeral arrangement, going into the most minute details.  During her sickness she informed her mother that she had presentment of her approaching death,  and told her where to find the letter and to open it after her death.

                 CAROL RYRIE BRINK

Carol Ryrie Brink [1895-1981] an American author of over thirty juvenile and adult books.  Her novel Caddie Woodlawn won the 1936 Newbery Medal.

Life
Born Caroline Ryrie on December 28, 1895, Moscow, Idaho, the only child of Alexander and Henrietta [Watkins] Ryrie Brink was orphaned by the age 8 and raised by her maternal grandmother, Caroline Watkins, the model for Caddie Woodlawn.  Her grandmother’s life and storytelling abilities inspired her writing at an early age.

She started writing for her school newspapers and continued that in college.  She attended the University of Idaho for three years [1914-17] before transferring to the University of California in 1917, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1918.  On June 12 of that year, she married University of Minnesota instructor Raymond Woodard Brink., a young mathematic professor she had met in Mosco.  They made their home in St. Paul for forty-two years, where they raised a son [David Ryrie Brink 1919-2017] and a daughter [Nora Caroline Brink Hunter 1926], spending summers in the Wisconsin backwoods, although they did traveled for several years in Scotland and France.

Anything Can Happen on the River, her first novel, was published in 1934.  She wrote fiction throughout her life, and added poetry and painting to her later accomplishments.  She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Idaho in 1965.  Brink Hall, which houses the UI English Department and faculty offices, is named in her honor.  The children’s section of the Moscow, IS Carnegie Public Library is also named after her.

She died of Heart Failure at the age eighty-five in La Jolla, Jolla California August 15, 1981.

DEAR MS ROOK--
Thank you so much for sending the great genealogy of the Brink/Ryrie/Watkins families,  working from the early 19th century down to the present Brinks.  What a lot of work and what a lot of information!
My parents were actually married in Wisconsin in Sawyer County south of Hayward on the bank of Lake Windigo, then called Bass Lake .  This was the Brink summer home and still is, although the buildings have changed.  It is possible that, after their honeymoon spent camping on Lake Vermilion, they registered their marriage in Minneapolis, which became their home  for the next forty years
Did you send a copy of this material to my sister Nora?  If not,  I will do so, as it certainly should be kept with the records of both our families.

Don't know how to thank you enough.  Perhaps you can tell me.
            Sincerely,
                   Dave Brink
