Rita Hollings ISLE OF PALMS -
Rita Liddy (Peatsy) Hollings, the wife of former U.S. Senator Ernest F.
Hollings and former teacher, died Sunday after an eight year battle with
Alzheimer's. She was 77. Peatsy, her childhood nickname, was born Rita Louise
Liddy in Charleston in 1935 to Thomas J. Liddy and Louise Molony Liddy. She
attended Charleston County Public Schools and was a graduate of the College of
Charleston, where she studied history.
She also received a graduate
degree in History from the University of South Carolina. She taught history and
government at Saint Andrews Parish High School for nine years and took an
active role in government well before her marriage to Mr. Hollings. From 1964
to 1966, she chaired the Charleston County Democratic Party. In 1971, she
married Mr. Hollings. Peatsy, known for her outgoing, straight-forward, dynamic
personality, volunteered for countless organizations.
Among her most rewarding achievements was
being appointed by President George H.W. Bush for a four year tenure on the
12-member National Advisory Mental Health Council at the National Institute of
Mental Health. She was Chairman of the Ford's Theater and also served as the National Campaign Chair for
the Campaign for the College of Charleston. In this role, she helped raise $45
million to further the educational goals and ensure the future of her alma
mater. In honor of her service, in 2003, the College of Charleston dedicated
the Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center.
In addition to serving tirelessly in the
Senate Wives Club and as a Red Cross Lady, she also served on the Hollings
Cancer Center Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the SC Aquarium.

Kay
was one of the stars of more than twenty of Traynor Ferillo's annual
productions of the "Charleston Fun Show," presented at the Dock
Street Theatre. Undoubtedly, Kay is proudly auditioning with others in Heaven
for an everlasting production of peace and joy. Kay was a graduate of St.
Andrew's Parish High School, Class of 1956.
Following
high school, Kay attended the College of Charleston, where she was a member of
Chi Omega sorority, as well as first runner-up for Miss College of Charleston.
Kay was also a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, of which
her parents were charter members. Kay carried on her parents' dedication to
Blessed Sacrament Church by being one of the original volunteers in a weekly
time slot at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and continuing her weekly
commitment for twenty years.
Kay
was an avid fan of football, of all levels, cheering louder than anyone for the
Alabama Crimson Tide and the Carolina Panthers. Kay never missed a Citadel
football game, faithfully attending both home and away games, to cheer for her
husband's alma mater. She may have even been the most excited fan when the The
Citadel beat USC in 1990, as she was so overcome with joy that she whirled
around and picked up General Grimsley in celebration.
Kay
also attended eight Super Bowls, delighted to witness in person what the whole
world was watching on T.V. Although Kay enjoyed many interests and played many
roles in her lifetime, the roles for which Kay will be most remembered are
those of loving wife of Claude Baldwin, III, devoted mother of five boys, and
fun-loving grandmother of seven grandchildren.
To
her family, she will forever be a star. Kay was predeceased by her parents,
Thomas J. and Louise Molony Liddy, and her sister, Rita (Peatsy) Liddy
Hollings.
Surviving
Kay are her husband of 53 years, Claude Baldwin, III; their five sons: Julian
(Ann), Claude IV (Lucy), James, Thomas, and Michael (Katherine); and their
seven grandchildren: James, Hannah, Julian, Cullen, Claude V, Anna Katherine,
and Tyler. Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Building
Fund, 5 St. Teresa Dr. Charleston, SC 29407. Arrangements by JAMES A.
