Biography-Obituary April 18, 1900 Paper: Seattle Dail Times Pg 4
JOHN VIPOND WOOHOUSE.

ANACORSTES, MONDAY April 16,--Vipond Woodhouse a resident of this city for ten years past, died Thursday morning aged 75 years. He was native of Lancaster England, from which place he came to American at the age of 14 years and entered the employ of his Stepfather J. Crawshaw, a carpet manufacturer of Boston, Mass. At the age of 16 years, he wove the first piece of Brussels carpet made in America and the loom upon which this woven was exhibited by his stepfather at the centinial at the Philidelphia. In 1856 he took the first steam engine to the lumbering region around Eugalla Wisconsin, and for ten years managed a sawmill for the firm of Knapp, Stout & Co. From that point he went to St. Louis MO., and while in the service of Jerard B. Allen & Co., susperintended putting the steam heating paint into the St. Louis insane asylum, and was also general foreman of the iron work of the great Eads bridge, connecting East and West St. Louis. In 1870 he was engaged by Lockwood, Scott & Co., as superintendent of their works for treating lead ores, and later patented the Scotch eye, used extensively in smelting operations, and commonly known as the Woodhouse patent. He was next in charge of the Smelting plant of the Pitcher Lead & Zinc Company, at Joplin Mo., Where he remained for seven years, and invented two lift and and force pumps that soon found there way into popular favor among the mining fraternity. He erected the smelting works at the Rich Hill Mo., for Jay Gould and the Pitcher Brothers, as a cost $150,000. And in 1834 retired from business life to a fruit farm near Bunker Hill Ill. This life was not active enough for him, however, and he accepted an offer to go to San Antonio Texas Mexican delicacy, Chili Concarne, and while there made the first machine to successfully grind Chili peppers. He then became interested in the Pacific Coast and its possibilities and in 1891 came to Anacories, where he built a cozy suburban home and had a model fruit farm of small proportions. The Woodhouse home is noted for the thoroughness with which everything is done. If he drained his land, it was done in the most scientific manner; his fruits were of choices variesties, and the trees had the best of care; a great lover of flowers, his home was as attractive as a professional florist could have made it; up to the time of the death of Mrs. Woodhouse last September, it was one of the pleasure of life at Anacontes to go to this well kept home, where all were welcome. Mr. Woodhouse was a great reader and a broad-minded thinker as well.

He liked the society of young people, was jolly and never tired of entertaining his friends.

Mr. Woodhouse was married in 1847 at Boston, to Harriett Jane White, to whom was born ten children, five sons and five daughters, of whom eight are still living. Of these;

She is the perfect daughter to Harriet who is homebound and lady like.

Caroline Augusta Woodhouse, known as Caddie Woodlawn, was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1853. In 1857, her father John V. Woodhouse decided to take his family west to Eau Galle, Wisconsin. She had four brothers and sisters at the time; Clara, Mary, Tom, and Warren. They all survived the trip to Wisconsin, but within a short time of arriving, Mary died, perhaps from the long journey from Boston. Mary was buried in a very simple grave that was marked by a white picket fence located on a wooded rise of land in the northwest corner of the 160 acres that the Woodhouse family called home.

Caddie Woodlawn
By Carol Ryrie Brink- Grand-daughter to Caddie Woodhouse

4. Caddie Woodlawn age 11 years old born in Boston year 1864 pg 1 [Born in Boston] She was close to her brothers, Tom, and Warren. Her father watched them with pride.

All three of them had red-hair. [Tom and Caddie—wide eyed and red headed three adventures]
Alias: Full name Carolina August Woodlawn pg 14

Notes: pg 15 Caddie’s father had to say. She loved to hear him say it in his deep, quiet voice. He would be telling how frail she and little Mary had been when they came to Wisconsin from Boston, and how, after little Mary had died, he had begged his wife to let him try an experiment with Caddie.

He said to Harriet he had said I want you to let Caddie Run wild with boys. Don’t keep her in the house learning to be a lady. I would rather see her learn to plow than male samplers, if she can get her healthy by doing so. I believe it is worth trying. Bring the others girls up as you like, but let me have Caddie.

For seven years Caddie ran wild.

Caddie had seen the President of the United States when she had visited St. Louis PG 25 President Abraham Lincoln

Died: 1857 Dunnville Dunn County Wisconsin
Parents: John Vipond Woodhouse, Harriett Jane White
Cause of Death: Fragile to the pioneer life and caused her death
Interment: North Hill Cemetery Memomonie Wisconsin

Mary is deceased at a young age: The move towards the west was hardship that she was not able to understand Caddie Woodlawn

5. Mary—deceased born in Boston however died in Wisconsin pg 15 she was frail when she moved from Boston to Wisconsin and died. [Fragile to the pioneer life and caused her death]

In 1900 Ash Pierce was married, in Everett, Washington, to Mrs. Etta Pulley, a native of Wisconsin and a daughter of John V. Woodhouse, the inventor of the Woodhouse Water Back, which is universally usedin lead and zinc smelting plants. His death occurred about fifteen years ago at Anancortes Washington. Mr. Pierce has served as city treasurer for two years, being the third man elected to that office in Hermiston. During his residence in the county he has ever been upright and honorable and the number of his friends is almost coextensive with the circle of his acquaintance. His sterling traits of character, as well as his business ability, have won high regard which is uniformly tendered him.

Caddie Woodlawn
Page 16 Baby Joe

Glad you have information on the other Woodhouse siblings - I only knew about Caddie's life & of course Joe's. I will have to check my notes & write you later but basically, Joe met my grandmother while living with his family in West Plains Missouri. At one point he did go to work in Kansas & there was a series of letters between him & my grandmother that I have read. Joe was a ladies man unfortunatly. He & my grandmother had 3 children but he deserted them after being caught in a compromising situation with a neighbor lady! I tracked him down through genealogy & found that he went to Texas, married a young lady there & they moved to Pennsylvania, where he worked for the railroad. Obviously he was up to his old habits because she returned to her family in Texas while pregnant, had their child there & divorced him. Joe then married another lady in Pennsylvania & had, I believe, 2 boys. I actually spoke on the phone to one of those boys back in the 1990s (he was quite old) & he told me that his mother told them Joe died in 1906, when they were very young, but he always wondered if Joe hadn't actually run off instead. I do think Joe did in fact die then as I have a letter from Caddie to my grandmother & her children informing them of his death.

There were a few letters that survived from Caddie which showed her concern for Joe's children, which was very nice. The story of the Woodhouse claim to a fortune in England, by the way, was told by Joe to my grandmother in much the same way that it is related in the book "Caddie Woodlawn."

Jeanette-
I really loved the information you posted on the Woodhouse family. I recently finished reading Caddie Woodlawn and was interested in what happened to her family. Searching the internet I found lots of information about Caroline but not much about her parents and siblings. In contacting the Dunn County Genealogical Society, they didn't send me much. Your blog was the windfall. You might want to see if you can add your blog to their site or use it as a reference. Your documentation from census and marriage records were amazing (isn't ancestry.com wonderful!), you have really done an amazing work. THANK you so much for sharing. Kirstin
