SPRINGFIELD MASS JANUARY 2, 1959 Miss Mabel R. Welch, a painter of miniatures, died last night at her home in Wibraham after a long illness. She was 87 years old.
Miss. Welch, who studied at the Art Students League and in Paris, won the Silver Medal of the Pan-Pacific Exposition in 1915. The Pennsylvania society of miniatures Painters presented to her it’s Medal of Honor in 1920, and she received a similar award in 1933 from the Brooklyn Society of miniature painters.
In 1937 Miss Welch received two awards. The National Society of women Painters and Sculptors gave her the Lindsey Morris Sterling Prize for Miniatures and the California Society of Miniature painters awarded to her a medal for portraiture.
The Medal for Merit from Asbury Park Society for fine Arts was presented to Miss Welch in 1940. That year also, she won the Levantis White Bordman memorial prize. In 1955, she received the medal for Miniatures from the National Association of Woman Artists.
Her work is represented in permanent collections at the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington and the Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts. She exhibited her work also in Los Angeles Chicago, the 1939 New York World’s Fair and the Paris Salon.

MISS MABEL WELCH, ARTIST IN WILBRAHAM MASSACHUSETTS
Miss Mabel R. Welch, daughter of the late Dr. F.G. Welch and Rose Merrill Welch of 171 Main St., Wilbraham, died Thursday at her home after a long illness. She was born March 26, 1871. She leaves two nephews Merrill E. Welch of Shorthill, N.J. and Kenneth Welch of Media Pa. She was a member of Wilbraham United Church. The funeral will be held at Bryon’s funeral home Saturday at 4:30. REV Walter James Will officiates. Burial will at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. It is requested that flowers be omitted and those who prefer may make contributions to the United Church Memorial Fund.
Miss Welch was known throughout the world for her miniature paintings. She is represented in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia, PA., the Corcarn Gallery in Washington D.C., the Brooklyn [N.Y.]. Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
She had exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the National Association of Woman Painters and Sculptors, the Allied Artists of America, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Los Angeles Museum, Baltimore Museum, the century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago in 1933, the New York World’s Fair in 19391jkr., the Albright Gallery in Chicago, the Royal Society of Miniature Painters in London the Paris Salon and in Buenos Aires.
She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the American Society of Miniature Painters, the Brooklyn Society of Miniature and an honorary member of Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters.
She received the following awards: Pan Pacific Exposition, silver medal 1915; Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters, Medal of Honor 1920; the Brooklyn Society of Miniature Painters, and an honorary member of the Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters.
She received the following awards: Pan-Pacific Exposition, silver medal, 1915: Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters Medal of Honor, 1933; the California Society of Miniature Painters, portrait prize, 1940; the national society of Women Artist, miniature prize 1955.
Miss Welch attended Wilbraham Academy and was graduated in the class of 1888. She left for New York City for further study at the Art Students League and then Paris and Holland. It was while in Europe that with a chance encounter with a painter of miniature interested her in this old art world. She went on to claim artist. She returned to New York City, where she taught at the Art Student League
