The Dreaded Gift Return

The Dreaded Gift Return
Not So Easy
A Report by Consumerreports.org
Don't feel guilty about returning that singing mounted fish your cousin bought you. He might be returning your gift, too. About 40 percent of Americans take back at least one gift after the holidays, says the National Retail Federation.If you find yourself in line to return a gift this season, you're apt to discover that store policies have become stricter. Restocking fees for opened boxes or missing packaging are increasingly common, and not just for electronics. For example, Sears now imposes a 15 percent restocking fee for some appliances, tools, and lawn and garden products.
===================================================================
Stores have also become more persnickety about receipts. Last summer, Target changed its policy to allow for two receiptless returns a year of items less than $20. Before that the threshold was $100.Kmart, Lowe's, and Wal-Mart are among the retailers that now use computer systems to monitor how often customers return items without sales slips. If you bring back too many within a given period, the store might stop accepting them. Some retailers say they're trying to prevent returns of stolen goods.
===================================================================
HAPPY RETURNS If returning a singing fish is essential to your sanity, follow our tips and the process should go swimmingly.
===================================================================
Check the policy. It's probably on the store's Web site. If not, call the customer-service line or the store. Note that some stores have more generous return policies for goods purchased at holiday time.
====================================================================
Handle with care. Lost tags, missing packaging, or damaged boxes make it less likely you'll get your due. Amazon.com says it won't accept returns of products missing the serial number or UPC square on the box. Best Buy and Circuit City charge a 15 percent restocking fee on some electronic items whether or not you've opened the box. But you should not have to pay a restocking fee if the item was defective when you unwrapped it.
==================================================================
Bring the receipt. Being able to present one makes it more likely that you'll get back the item's full value. Without a receipt, a retailer might credit you with the lowest recent price or simply deny your return altogether. Gift givers should try to include one whenever possible.
==================================================================
Go to the right place. If the item was purchased by mail order or on the Internet, make sure you send it to the address the retailer specifies. The retailer might also have a location near you that takes mail-order returns. Sears, for instance, accepts Lands' End returns at its stores. But Macy's and Kohl's, which sell online and in stores, don't accept returns by mail if the merchandise was purchased in a store.
===================================================================
Clear your good name. If your return is denied and you don't know why, you may have been incorrectly flagged by a store's computer for committing "return fraud." You might be able to correct the matter by e-mailing the Return Exchange, a company that monitors returns for retailers, at returnactivityreport@thereturnexchange.com.

Bad Choice Ordering On Line Walmart.COM

Bad Choice Ordering On Line
Never Shop Walmart.COM. On December 4, 2007 I purchased on line the X BOX Elite System Bundle Package. The Total cost was $763.02. The price includes taxes and shipping and handling.
All the Items for the X BOX was coming. I received, Wireless Controller; two games and the Web Camera. All but the X BOX Console Elites. I was suppose to receive it On December 10, 2007. The Game system had not arrived.
So on December 17, 2007 I called the 800 966 6546 I spoke to a Supervisor by the name of Wendy. I explained to her about the order and that I had not received the X BOX Elite Console and I had asked where it was. I was suppose to receive it.
Wendy Said I must have been lost in transition and that she would send me another and I would receive in by December 24, 2007. I told her I am going to be in Pittsburg PA. I also said that is not what I was promised and that is not what I paid for. She said I was right. So she said that it would be sent by UPS overnight shipping at no charge to me.
On December 18, 2007 I checked my E-mail Wendy the supervisor instead of being honest with me she failed to tell they were out of stock on the X BOX Elite 360 system. To Cover Walmart.COM tracks they sent The Arcade X BOX system figuring I am not going to notice the difference. I noticed the difference.
The Arcade Mode would not have support the extra merchandise that came with the Elite System which is 120 GB. and there is a price difference. The Arcade Mode X BOX 360 runs $279.99 and the Elite X BOX 360 is priced at $449.92.
I confronted Walmart and that became hell; On December 18, 2007 I called the 800 number again provided by Walmart and I spoke to another Supervisor Elizabeth I said why did Walmart try to defraud me. She made excuses for Wendy.
I told her this wrong. I went to the Store in OAK GROVE KENTUCKY. The Store tried to correct what Walmart.com They had done with the X BOX Elite system in the store. However; Walmart.COM to the Store they could not do that and I was not entitled to a refund at that point because of the Arcade Mode had not been returned. I had not received the ARCADE MODE and my credit card still would have been defrauded $207.22. With Tax and Shipping the Console cost $486.22. Minus the difference $279.00
Right now my credit card is still defrauded by Walmart $486.22. I returned the systems components. The Store could not credit my credit card at that point.
The Arcade Mode of the X BOX arrives at my home December 18, 2007 at 2 PM Centeral time. So I refused the shipping on the grounds of Fraud. I had the UPS sign the receipt that the item was refused. 1 800 742 5877 the number to the United Parcel Service to track shipping.
I had asked Walmart why could they have been honest and I would have told them to refund the money. Also I had asked walmart for something that is expensive; when they shipped the item; I had asked this to Wendy; how come the company just ships expensives Items and not ask for a signature. I told her I had purchase from Dell Computer and Verizon and I had to sign for the items I had order for security reasons and to make sure I had received the items.
I was going to buy the system at first through AMAZON.COM I never had a problem with Amazon.com.
Now I will have to fight with my credit card company and declare fraud with Walmart. I have already submitted the paper work.
When I went to the store only one the Managers said Walmart did not committ Fraud I said and showed him the paper work and I said to him explain the matter to me.
Walmart.COM has not gone out of its way to correct the problem they made the problem only worse.
Bottomline Walmart.Com doesn't require a signature on expensive items they just take your money and when it comes to shipping the carry just drops the item off and leaves it without the patron signing for the items. I blame the Walmart.COM.
I figured if I buy it from Walmart I was going to have no problems and if I had a problem with the system I could take to the nearest store. My husband is currently serving in IRAQ and I am Disable American Veteran. My husband wanted to do something for his children.
This is terrible what Walmart has done.

Cause and time of death
During vehicle breakup, the robustly-constructed crew cabin detached in one piece and slowly tumbled. NASA estimated separation forces at about 12 to 20 times the force of gravity g very briefly; however, within two seconds, the forces on the cabin had already dropped to below 4 g, and within ten seconds the cabin was undergoing free fall. These forces were likely insufficient to cause major injury. At least some of the astronauts were likely alive and briefly conscious after the breakup, because three of the four Personal Egress Air Packs (PEAPs) on the flight deck were found to have been activated. Investigators found their remaining unused air supply roughly consistent with the expected consumption during the 2 minute 45 second post-breakup trajectory. Whether the astronauts remained conscious long after the breakup is unknown, and largely depends on whether the detached crew cabin maintained pressure integrity. If it did not, time of useful consciousness at that altitude is just a few seconds; the PEAPs supplied only unpressurized air, and hence would not have helped the crew to retain consciousness. The crew cabin impacted the ocean surface at roughly 334 km/h (207 mph), causing an instantaneous deceleration of over 200 g, far beyond the structural limits of the crew compartment or crew survivability levels.[9]

Space Shuttle Challenger

The Challenger launch, originally scheduled for January 22, 1986, came on January 28 at 11:38 am under a brilliant blue sky and near-freezing temperatures. All appeared normal in the first moments after liftoff, the 25th since the shuttle program began in April 1981. But after 73 seconds, at an altitude of 14,000 meters (46,200 feet), Challenger exploded in an enormous fireball of hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Its two booster rockets took off in different directions leaving a trail of flame and smoke, forming an immense "V" in the sky. In addition to McAuliffe, 37, and Scobee, 46, the Challenger disaster killed co-pilot Michael Smith, 40; physicist Ronald McNair, 38, only the second black astronaut; Gregory Jarvis, 42, a mission specialist; Ellison Onizuka, 40, a Haitian-born astronaut of Japanese descent; and mission specialist Judith Resnik, 37. Twenty years later, the US space shuttle program has Still not overcome doubts about its safety and value. A presidential commission concluded the accident was caused by a defective seal on a solid rocket booster. NASA carried out an elaborate review of its rocket design and spent more than two billion dollars on modifications.

But the credibility of the US space agency was again called into question after the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry into the atmosphere in February 2003, due to a loose piece of insulating foam that punctured its wing on take off.

Francis Richard "Dick" Scobee (May 19, 1939 - January 28, 1986) was an American astronaut who died commanding the Space Shuttle Challenger, which suffered catastrophic booster failure during launch of the STS-51-L mission.
Born in Cle Elum, Washington, Scobee enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957, where he served as a reciprocating engine mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas. While off duty, he attended college, and eventually received a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona in 1965; the same year, he was awarded an officer's commission. Afterward, he attended flight school and earned his wings in 1966, serving as a combat aviator in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and other decorations.
After his tour of duty, Scobee attended the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, just outside Los Angeles, California. Upon graduation in 1972, he became an Air Force test pilot, logging thousands of hours of flight time in dozens of aircraft, including the Boeing 747, the experimental X-24B lifting body, the F-111 Aardvark, and the gigantic C-5 Galaxy. Scobee died a Lieutenant colonel. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Selected for NASA's astronaut program in January 1978, Scobee completed his training in August 1979. While awaiting his first orbital spaceflight mission, he served as an instructor pilot for the shuttle's 747 carrier aircraft. In April 1984, Scobee piloted Challenger mission STS-41-C, which successfully deployed one satellite and repaired another.
Scobee was elevated to the role of spacecraft commander for the ill-fated STS-51-L mission. The mission, designed to deploy a satellite to study the approaching Halley's Comet and to inaugurate the Teacher in Space Project, was delayed numerous times due to bad weather and technical glitches. When the mission finally did lift off the pad, an O-ring seal failure destroyed the shuttle 73 seconds into the flight, killing Scobee and the other six members of the crew; the tragedy, viewed live on national television, prompted several days of national mourning, as well as a major shakeup at NASA.
Laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, Scobee was survived by his wife June (nee Kent) and two children, Kathie and Richard. In his spare time, he loved all forms of outdoor activity, as well as flying, oil painting, woodwork, riding motorcycles, playing racquetball, and running. In 2004, Scobee was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
He attended Auburn Senior High School, Cascade Middle School, and North Auburn Elementary School in Auburn, Washington. He graduated in 1957. After the Challenger explosion, North Auburn Elementary School was re-named Dick Scobee Elementary School in his honor. Auburn Municipal Airport was also renamed Dick Scobee Field.[1]
Dick Scobee Road in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was also named in his honor.[2] Also located nearby in Myrtle Beach are Ronald McNair Boulevard and Christa McAuliffe Street.

Scobee was portrayed by Barry Bostwick in the 1990 TV movie Challenger.

He said mommy come here and take a look. Well someone the let pet out of the house. We were told it was Komodo Dragon. That is grows to 8 to 9 feet in length. I said my cats would become its snack.

So we called 911 and though we were joking. So I had to call the police department directly. The police officer said he is a nice size. I said you need to take it to the zoo were he /she belongs.

DEATH OF PORTER WAGNOR

PORTER WAGNOR

1927-2007

---------------------------

Porter, Dolly and Joe from the Rascal Flatts April 2005 Grand Ole Opry.

--------------------------------------

Jeannie is longer afraid of the Dark. Porter Wagnor just join her to keep the light going.

-----------------------------

The Porter Wagnor show is played in re-runs on the RFD channel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bio--Porter Wagoners’ broad smile, flashy costume and memorable songs are the very image of a country music star. Indeed, he is an icon in the music industry. The “Thin Man From West Plains” (Missouri), is among the most recognized names and images in all of country music. His grand showmanship, his rhinestone suits, his loyalty to the Grand Ole Opry, his TV leadership, his championing of Dolly Parton, his unique singing voice, his exquisite recitations, his songwriting, and especially, his record production, have all culminated in the legacy that is Porter Wagoner.Porter Wayne Wagoner was born August 12, 1927 of Irish-German heritage in the Ozarks of Missouri near the Arkansas border. In 1949, Porter visited Nashville and witnessed Hank Williams singing “Lovesick Blues” at the Grand Ole Opry.By 1950, he was working in Vaughn’s butcher shop on the town square and singing (and reading commercials) on a 15-minute early morning show over local radio KWPM in his hometown. Executives from Springfield, Missouri’s KWTO radio station then recruited him for their station in September 1951. In 1952, Porter found himself recording his first RCA release, Williams’ “Settin’ The Woods On Fire”. 1953 brought Porter his first songwriting success with the Carl Smith hit, “Trademark”. During this time the Porter Wagoner Trio, with Don Warden (steel guitar) and Herschel “Speedy” Haworth (electric guitar) was formed and began touring. 1954 brought Porter his first top 10 hit with “Company’s Comin’”. “A Satisfied Mind” came next and went to number one for 4 weeks and stayed on the charts for over 8 months. In 1954, Porter became a part of the “Ozark Jubilee” and on February 23, 1957 he joined the “Grand Ole Opry” where he remains one of its most popular stars.Television has also been a major part of Porter's time in the public eye. He started the syndicated "Porter Wagoner Show" in 1960 and it remained on the air for an amazing 21 years airing in close to two hundred markets and seen by an estimated 3.5 million viewers. The "Porter Wagoner Show" was a key factor in popularizing country and gospel music across the United States. Throughout the 1960’s, there were lots of hit recordings and television work. In 1967, after seven magical years together, Pretty Miss Norma Jean left Porter’s show to get married. Early September of that year brought a fledging female singer named Dolly Parton as Norma’s replacement. In the next few years “Carrol County Accident” became a standout country hit and crossed into the pop charts, earning Porter a Grammy nomination and 1969 CMA “Song Of The Year” honors. Porter and Dolly duets became increasingly popular, earning nominations and awards from the Grammys, CMA, ACM, MCN and a host of other awards shows. In 1965, he helped create another country and pop standard, “Green, Green Grass Of Home”. There have been over 500 versions, but Porter’s was the first hit. Porter’s career was on a definite upswing in 1969, when he won his third Grammy for “Best Gospel Performance” with the Blackwood Brothers.The 1970’s brought more hit records (with Dolly and alone) and more television. In 1979, he hosted “The Godfather Of Soul”, James Brown at the Grand Ole Opry.In the 1980’s Porter landed a role in the movie, “Honkytonk Man” with Clint Eastwood.The 1990’s brought the Nashville Network and even more television work and appearances on the Grand Ole Opry for Porter.With the new millennium under way, Porter received his highest accolade with his induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2002.Porter has been awarded four Grammy awards. Three of which were won for his work in gospel music. Gospel music has, in fact, always been at the heart and soul of his legacy. He began recording again after many years and in 2004, Gusto/King Records’ owner recognized him as the “King Of Country Gospel”. “22 Grand Old Gospel 2004”, became one of the best-selling gospel CD’s in the Gusto/King/Tee Vee music catalog. Dolly stated “it’s one of the best albums I have ever heard, bar none…I’ll enjoy this forever”. The follow-up collection, “18 Grand Old Gospel 2005”, released in January 2005, includes several songs written by Porter himself. Also featured on both collections are duets with Porters current singing partner, Pam Gadd. In 2004 Porter and Pam recorded “Something To Brag About” giving some of country music’s most classic songs their own spin. The CD received glowing reviews in 2005, Also that year, Porter recorded a collection of his “20 All Time Greatest Hits” for Gusto/King. He revisited all the classics we know him for. “A Satisfied Mind”, “Carroll County Accident”, “Skid Row Joe”, “Trouble In The Amen Corner”, “Company’s Comin’”, “Green, Green Grass Of Home”, “Ole Slew Foot”, “The Cold Hard Facts Of Life”, “Sunny Side Of The Mountain” and all the recordings that helped to make him a legend.January 2006 brought the third installment in the highly successful recordings with a country/gospel flavor. "Gospel 2006" and the first single, "The Dream (A True Story)" is getting great reviews, charting positions and airplay from many top Classic and Christian Country radio stations all across America.Porter is not one to brag, but he is widely acknowledged by new country performers as the epitome of showmanship. Those who are truly trying to learn the business, watch him to see how he puts on a total show, making everyone in the audience feel special. He wouldn’t say he’s doing anything special, he’s just being himself.

what is crem fresh

What is Crem Fresh?

créme fraîche (creme fraiche)
Pronunciation: CREM FRESH

Notes: This slightly sour thick cream doesn't curdle when it's heated, so it's ideal for making cream sauces. It's also used for appetizers and as a dessert topping.

To make your own: Warm one cup heavy cream to about 100°, then add one or two tablespoons of sour cream, cultured buttermilk, or plain yogurt (make sure you buy a brand that contains active cultures).

Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for at least nine hours before refrigerating.

Substitutes: crema Mexicana OR equal parts sour cream and heavy cream OR clabber cream (thicker consistency) OR sour cream (This has a lower fat content, and so it's more likely to curdle if boiled with an acidic ingredient.) OR yogurt (This will definitely curdle when boiled.)

Molly Brown of The RMS Titanic

Molly Brown of The RMS Titanic

____________________________________________________________________

Molly Brown of The RMS Titanic The Victorian era spawned much new wealth in industrialized America, and a popular way the nouveau rich spent their money was to take the "Grand Tour" of Europe often extending the trip to more exotic destinations such as Egypt and Japan. Without the speed of today's airplanes, these trips usually took three months or more to complete. (Such a trip was satirized in Mark Twain's book Innocents Abroad.) In the early months of 1912, Molly and her daughter Helen, who had been attending the Sorbonne in Paris, were taking such a tour with John Jacob Astor and his second wife, 19 year old Madeline (after a rather scandalous divorce.)Molly had been writing her sister Katie back in Hannibal, that she intended to come for a few weeks' visit that spring. But then she received a telegram from her son Larry that her five-month-old first grandchild was ill. She decided to book passage at the last minute on board Titanic. Daughter Helen decided to stay in Paris for a few more parties. So Molly was traveling without family, but she was joining her friends the Astors.The cost of the most expensive first-class accommodations was $4350 for the six-day voyage. Other celebrities, who were part of this social event of 1912, included millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim; Charles Hayes, president of the Grand Trunk Railway; Mr. & Mrs. Isadore Straus, owners of Macy's Department Store; and J. Bruce Ismay, co-owner of the White Star Line which had built Titanic. The April 10, 1912 Hannibal Courier Post front page reported the embarkment of Titanic from South Hampton, England. Molly and the Astors boarded at the Cherbourg, France stopover. It was the largest ship ever made--four city blocks long and reaching as high as an eleven -story building. Built with 16 watertight compartments that could stay afloat even if four were flooded, publications of the day referred to Titanic as "unsinkable."The degree of luxury for passengers like Mrs. J.J. Brown was unsurpassed. Some staterooms had four poster beds and coal-burning fireplaces. The public rooms included palm verandahs, a gymnasium, Turkish bath, swimming pool and library. We do not know the exact cabin number for Molly because she booked her passage at the last minute, she was not on the printed roster of passengers. But we know she was on the forward right side of Deck B--the first class deck.Molly was in bed reading a book, when at 11:40 p.m., April 14, 1912, the lookout, Frederick Fleet, in Titanic's crow's nest phoned the bridge, "Iceberg right ahead!" The impact threw Molly to the floor. Most passengers were unaware of the collision until they noticed the hum of engines had stopped. By 12:15 a.m., the ship was preparing the lifeboats. Molly wisely put on six pairs of wool stockings, a wool suit, fur coat, hat and muff. She put $500 cash in one pocket, and a good luck amulet she had purchased recently on her Egyptian tour in her other pocket.After helping other women, Molly found herself thrown into Lifeboat No. 6 by two American merchants who said, "You are going, too." The boat with capacity for 65 held fewer than 30 when it was lowered to the water, including lookout Fleet and Quartermaster Hichens who had been at the pilot wheel upon impact.Frightened Hichens warned the lifeboat would be sucked down when Titanic sank. Molly took charge and grabbed the oars and ordered the women to row toward the light onthe horizon, which they hoped was a rescue ship. Adrift on the cold Atlantic, Molly shared her extra pairs of stockings, and kept the women warm by having them take turns rowing. They watched in horror as the steamer sank at 2:20 a.m., April 15th. She was appalled that Hichens refused to turn the lifeboat back to pick up more survivors.After almost 6 hours of terror, the ship Carpathia answered the distress call. Once on board, Molly helped organize relief efforts. Her knowledge of foreign languages enabled her to aid the frightened immigrants who had lost everything, including their husbands. Molly voiced her opinion that the "women and children first" policy was tragically immoral. "Women demand equal rights on land--why not on sea?" she asked.Even when the Carpathia arrived in New York, Molly stayed on board to reassure the terrified foreign women. Since the White Star Line provided no relief to these widows and orphans, nor for the families of the dead crewmembers, Molly raised $10,000 of private money from the wealthy passengers, including the $500 cash she donated, to aid these poor victims. Molly returned to New York on May 29, 1912 to present Captain A.H. Rostron a token of esteem of the Titanic survivors. She also had a medal struck for each of the crew of Carpathia, which depicted a ship plowing through icebergs toward a tossing lifeboat. The story circulated that when first interviewed by reporters in New York, they asked to what she attributed her survival. "Typical Brown luck," she supposedly said, "We're unsinkable." The label stuck, and she became a national celebrity. Even back in Denver, Mrs. Crawford Hill deigned to host a luncheon in her honor.Molly had to postpone her trip to visit her sister, Katie Becker, in Hannibal. It was reported in the December 18, 1915 Hannibal Courier Post that Molly came to spend the winter with Katie to improve her health as she had been suffering from nervous trouble since she had witnessed the horrible scene of Titanic sinking. It was also reported that Molly finally settled her claim against the White Star Line after almost four years for the sum of $10,000 for the loss of her jewelry, clothes, etc. Titanic turned Molly into a political figure. She spoke out for maritime reform, women's right to vote, and improved conditions for miners. In 1914 she ran for the U.S. Senate on the Democratic-Progressive ticket in the state of Colorado, albeit unsuccessfully.During the Mexican War, she advocated a military regiment for women, but was dismissed as eccentric. During WWI, Molly went back to France on her own to volunteer at the American Hospital in Paris, working with wounded soldiers. She helped raise money with Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt to import ambulances to France for the war effort. She also entertained the troops, specializing in Sarah Bernhardt roles. For these services, she was named to the French Legion of Honor.Molly continued to be active, surviving two more ship disasters, and a hotel fire at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. She spent much of her later years in New York where she stayed at the Barbizon Hotel…a place where actresses often roomed. That is where she died on October 25, 1932 at age 65. Her fortune had dwindled to $1500 and her house in Denver, which sold the next year for only $5000. In her last act of charity, she wanted the poor mining children of Leadville, Colorado to have Christmas presents of woolen mittens and boots. She did not live to see her wish carried out by her nephew who distributed the gifts.Facts about Titanic __________________________________________________________________
